Thessaloniki
We started to visit Kalamaria just outside of Thessaloniki in Greece last summer and returned in Jan. Loved the down to earth friendly people, incredible history, and amazing sunsets. Plus dug the great older dudes (& women) in coffee shops hanging out in large groups for hours on end. Roman ruins were everywhere in the city. Plus loads of stray cats which was heartbreaking to see and Sacha spent a lot of time feeding. The tourist board say "Thessaloniki has many stories to tell, starting by the moment of its foundation in 316/315 B.C. Fortunate to have royal “blood”, since the new city was named after Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander the Great and daughter of Philip II, King of Macedonia. It was developed rapidly -due to its prominent geographical location- as one of the most important ports, and economical and commercial centers of Macedonia and the Balkan Peninsula as a whole, advantages maintained for the past 2300 years.“ I’ve put the photos from last summer first, then after the pics of the Alps you’ll see the pics from this Jan. Last summer temps were around 28-36 degrees, this Jan more like 12. Last summer, we spent a lot of time outside in a rooftop seating area as the afternoons were too hot to venture out far, this Jan was spent walking around shivering! Looking forward to going back.
